A NEW ERA

A new era for Downsend.

Downsend Sixth launches September 2025! Our brand new, purpose-designed, Sixth Form Centre will offer the very best of both worlds. Our new campus will offer young people the perfect environment for both academic success and personal growth.

Head's Welcome

Meet the Head.

Described by the Good Schools Guide as ‘refreshingly candid, with a knack for getting what he wants’, Ian Thorpe has been Head at Downsend for 10 years. A forward-thinking Head, Ian has been responsible for significant change at Downsend.

His can-do attitude, relentless energy and good humour, coupled with an impressive track record from Chinthurst, City of London Freemen's and Caterham School, mean that Downsend benefits from the best of both worlds – the ability to choose the best of the sector, whilst also innovating to do things differently.

FACILITIES & LOCATION

Excellent learning locations.

Innovative modern spaces bring specialist teaching to life at the Main School, while Little Downsend offers a home from home for our littlest children, with outstanding outdoor spaces for exploring and learning.

Passionate and inspiring leadership, down to earth, fantastic facilities and a modern, forward-thinking approach.

At Downsend, we’re all about creating a supportive, inclusive environment for every student! This week, we’re proud to participate in Anti-Bullying Week focusing on the importance of respect.

We asked our Year 11 and Year 6 students to share what ‘respect’ means to them, and they had some powerful insights to offer! We also caught up with our Year 6 Peer Mentors, the leaders of our Junior School, who work hard to ensure every student feels valued and included. Let’s hear what they had to say!

Last Friday, our fantastic Downsend Parents Association (DPA) hosted a fireworks display at the sports grounds of our school. The entire school community, including all three Little Downsend Schools, came together in the evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to catch up, enjoy a hot or refreshing drink, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display together. Thank you to the DPA for organising and thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable event!

Downsend School has been shortlisted for the prestigious City Kids Green Award 2024 in the ‘Best Student Initiative’ category for their impactful zero-waste snack policy!

Led by our incredible Junior School students, this initiative encourages everyone to reduce waste by eliminating single-use packaging from snacks—starting from home! Each week, classes strive for zero-waste snacks, tracked through our allergy-friendly snack register, with the reward of extra outdoor play time for achieving their goals. This effort has united students, parents, and teachers in a shared commitment to sustainability and community.

Since launching, the results have been outstanding:
20% reduction in general waste
Recycling rates up from 21% to 25%
94% of students aware of waste reduction goals

More than just numbers, our students have developed a deeper awareness and passion for sustainable practices, inspiring their families to make eco-friendly choices.

We’re delighted to celebrate this achievement and the hard work of our young leaders!

Earlier this week, the Garden of Remembrance in Bourne Hall Park, located in Ewell Village, was officially opened by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell. It was a privilege for the children of Little Downsend to be present at this meaningful occasion. Together, we paid tribute to the courageous women and men who lost their lives in the service of their country.
